Science Fiction, Reality, and Philip K. Dick

Has anyone seen any truly good science fiction movies lately? I’m not talking about the kind with all the special effects and graphics. This is about science fiction that makes you think about things. About the world; about society; about where we are headed.

One author who did this was Philip K. Dick. One of the best science fiction writers that ever wrote. In Valis, he created imaginary friends. The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch included space travel, mass hallucination, and global warming. Funny, considering it was written in 1965. Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep also departed from the norm and switch between reality and fantasy.

Possibly his best was Man in the High Castle, which posed the idea of what the world would be like if the Axis powers had won World War II. 

Much of his work considered alternate realities. He made you think of what things could be like. He made you imagine alternate realities. Philip K. Dick made you consider the impact of artificial intelligence long before it became something to consider.

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines adopted a clever and fun way to retrieve items from their planes. The dog appears quite happy to be part of this amusing method to quickly recover items.

Monday Makes for a Mighty Struggle

I had a very strenuous and busy weekend, making this Monday morning a struggle, at least an internal one. My project for the day is to write another chapter for my new science fiction novel, Morn. Morn the dystopian country that exists far into the future, created to block the rest of the world because the other countries always engaged in war, constant war, just the opposite of my first novel: 2186 The Last Mission.

Both novels take place in the future. I wondered why this morning, about the propensity to write about the future. A simple answer occurred to me. I like to speculate about which direction humankind will take. How we will deal with future situations, and how technology will affect us.

Take a minute to think about how computers changed the world. Think about how the World Wide Web developed from the internet, which DARPA developed because the United States military needed a defense system to combat asymmetrical warfare. This information came from my thesis: The Internet and Its Impact.

Think about how the world came to know one another better using the web. Now, I have friends, at least chat friends, from all over the world. Maybe one day, we will meet in person.

Writing On Nothing for a Bit for Creativity

I’ve had a couple of hectic weeks and the busyness prevented me from creating new posts for Science Fiction Writer, Writing On Monday I expect to be back to a normal schedule, whatever that may be.

Part of the busyness involved transferring notes from the new novel I'm writing, MORB (hopefully a best seller), from handwritten notes to the computer. Other activity was about learning something new and completely different. Learning something new and different, and usual at the same time, always adds to one's perspective on the world.
Some of the learning involved new experience that required using creativity , something I think the world could use more of to solve global dilemmas. So I’m not referring to the creative arts such as writing, dance, theater, music, painting and other fun things in that domain. Rather, the learning involved things such as helping deliver healthcare to everyone or creating global security , so the global population can pursue better lives and enjoy peace and happiness.
